I like the example of the chamber of commerce & the car dealerships. A chamber of commerce, a 501(c)6, can act in the interest of its members even when that is not in the best interest of the public - like conducting an event that is in the best interest of all car dealerships in the area but is actually to the detriment of the general public. In contrast, 501(c)3 organizations must always act in the best interest of the public.
Grant Funding Opportunity for 501(c)3 non-profits: Tom’s of Maine is sponsoring “50 States for Good,” an online funding opportunity for 501(c)(3) nonprofits working in one of the following three areas of interest: Environmental Goodness; Healthy Human Goodness; or Animal Goodness. Six organizations will share $150,000 sponsorship fund, including one organization that will be given $50,000.
Applications are due June 21, 2011. The online process appears pretty straightforward. A panel of judges will select 20 organizations that will then be open to an online voting process. Learn more and apply at http://www.50statesforgood.com.
